Hannah Shaw on the control of cryptosporidiosis in calves

The PhD presentation on Tuesday 23rd January, supported by AHDB Beef and Lamb, will be presented by Hannah Shaw on Cryptosporidiosis in calves; effect on calf growth and use of disinfectants.

Cryptosporidiosis, caused by the parasite C. parvum, is a common disease of pre-weaned calves. The potential long-term production effects of this parasite are currently unknown and this work aimed to address this knowledge gap.  Control through cleaning and disinfection is essential due to the lack of a vaccine and this study aims to determine the best disinfectant for reducing parasite viability.

Hannah graduated from the University of Glasgow with MSci (Hons) in Veterinary Biosciences. During her degree she spent one year on placement with the Moredun Research Institute studying environmental contamination of the parasites Cryptosporidium and Toxoplasma in Scotland. After her degree she returned to Moredun to do a PhD: ‘The control of cryptosporidiosis in calves’. Hannah is now in her third and final year and starting to write up. In the future she hopes to further her career in epidemiology and infectious disease.
